July is London's warmest and sunniest month, with average highs of about 24°C, and it is packed with events: Wimbledon finishes on 11 July 2027, Pride fills the West End, the BBC Proms season begins and Buckingham Palace opens for its summer season. It is also when the crowds peak, because the school summer holidays start in the last week of the month.
If you want warm weather and a full calendar, July delivers. The trade-off is price and pressure: hotels are at their most expensive, the big attractions are busy, and timed tickets for popular sights sell out days or weeks ahead.
The month has two halves. Until around 22 July London's schools are still in term, so weekdays are manageable. After that, families from across the UK and abroad arrive, and the city stays busy until the end of August.

The warmest, sunniest month on the calendar
According to the Met Office's 1991-2020 averages for Heathrow, July has an average high of 23.9°C and an average low of 14.2°C, making it London's warmest month by a small margin over August. It also has the most sunshine of the year, about 218 hours.
Average figures hide a wide range. Some July days are cool and cloudy at around 18°C, while in hot spells temperatures go well above 30°C. Rain falls on about eight days, often as short, heavy showers or thunderstorms rather than long wet spells, and the monthly total averages 45.8 mm.
These are figures for Heathrow, on the western edge of the city. Central London, with its dense buildings, can stay noticeably warmer at night, which matters if your hotel room has no air conditioning.
Wimbledon's second week and finals weekend
The 2027 Wimbledon Championships, the 150th anniversary edition, run from 28 June to Sunday 11 July, so the second week and the finals fall in July. The Public Ballot for 2027 has closed, but anyone can join the Queue for a limited number of daily tickets, one per person. The Queue starts in Wimbledon Park, about five minutes from Southfields station.

Pride in London
Pride in London is the capital's main LGBTQ+ event, combining a protest march, a parade and a day of celebration across the West End. In 2026 it took place on Saturday 4 July. The parade left Hyde Park Corner at 12:00, moved along Piccadilly to Piccadilly Circus, then down Haymarket past Trafalgar Square to finish on Whitehall, with the march usually over by 18:00.
The 2027 date had not been announced when we checked in September 2026; the organisers' site, prideinlondon.org, only said it will return in 2027. Watching the parade is free. The Proms: summer concerts at the Royal Albert Hall
The BBC Proms is an eight-week season of classical concerts, mostly at the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington. It is famous for its standing tickets, known as "Promming", which let you hear world-class orchestras for a low price if you are willing to stand.
The 2026 season ran from Friday 17 July to Saturday 12 September. The 2027 dates had not been announced when we checked, so look at the BBC Proms website in spring 2027. Our guide to the BBC Proms explains how tickets and standing places work.
Promming suits a spontaneous evening. If you did not plan ahead, standing places are the most flexible way into a Prom. Check the BBC Proms website on the day of the concert for how and when they are released, and be prepared to queue.
Buckingham Palace opens its State Rooms
The State Rooms of Buckingham Palace open for ordinary visits only in summer; the rest of the year there are just small guided tours on selected dates. In 2026 the summer opening ran from 9 July to 27 September, and in July and August the palace opened at 09:30, with last admission at 17:30. Adult tickets cost £33.00 booked in advance or £37.00 on the day (2026 prices).
The 2027 dates and prices had not been published when we checked, so look at the Royal Collection Trust website in spring. In 2026 some rooms were affected by the palace's reservicing programme, including the White Drawing Room, which was not open to visitors.
When the school summer holidays begin
The school year in England ends in the second half of July. In Lambeth, for example, the summer term ends on Thursday 22 July 2027; other boroughs and private schools set their own dates, and schools in other parts of the UK finish at different times.
From that point, family attractions, museums and the zoo are busiest, especially on rainy days when everyone heads indoors. Book timed entry wherever you can. The Warner Bros. The first three weeks of July are the smarter summer choice. You get the warmest weather of the year, Wimbledon and (if 2027 follows the 2026 pattern) the opening of the Proms, while London's schools are still in session. Weekday mornings before 22 July are noticeably calmer than anything in August.
Outdoor swimming in lidos and ponds
On a hot day, Londoners head for the water. The Serpentine Lido in Hyde Park is at its busiest in the main season, which usually runs from June to mid-September. In 2026 an adult full-day ticket cost £8.40, a single session £6.50 and entry after 16:00 £2.50. Booking is recommended but not essential, and under-16s must be with an adult.
The bathing ponds on Hampstead Heath are wilder and very popular in hot weather. In 2026 a single swim cost £5.00. The online booking system was closed in autumn 2026 and due to reopen in spring 2027, so check the City of London's swimming pages for how to book in summer 2027.
Handling a heatwave in the city
London is not built for heat. Many hotels, older homes and restaurants have no air conditioning, and the deep-level Tube lines, such as the Central, Northern and Bakerloo, get very warm. Newer trains on the Elizabeth line and the sub-surface lines (Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan) are air-conditioned. Our guide to the Underground explains the network.
On hot days, carry water, plan indoor sights for the early afternoon and do your walking in the morning or evening. Parks with shade, such as Kensington Gardens and Regent's Park, are cooler than the streets. The free national museums are a good place to spend the hottest hours.
If you walk a dog in Richmond Park, remember that July is the last month of the deer birthing season: dogs must be on a lead in all areas until 31 July.
Long evenings: markets, late museums and the August preview
