Whipsnade Zoo and Woburn

One is easy by bus and half price with the ticket. The other needs a car.

Whipsnade Zoo can be reached from London without a car, and doing so cuts the admission price in half: travel by bus or train and ZSL takes 50% off the walk-up gate price, which beats booking online. Woburn Safari Park cannot be reached without a car at all. Its own website says the park is only accessible in your own vehicle, and that taxi drivers are charged admission along with every passenger. And Woburn Abbey has been closed for restoration since 2019.

The two are not next door. Whipsnade sits on the Chiltern escarpment above Dunstable in Bedfordshire, 600 acres of hillside with more than 10,000 animals in it and the largest zoo in Britain. Woburn is about fourteen miles north-east: a 360-acre drive-through safari park, a walk-round section and a great house with a 3,000-acre deer park, all on the Duke of Bedford's estate. Our guide to ZSL London Zoo covers Whipsnade's much smaller sister site in Regent's Park, and our list of day trips that work with children puts both in context.

Whipsnade without a car, and the discount nobody mentions

ZSL runs an offer at Whipsnade only: "Travel to Whipsnade Zoo by bus or train and you'll be given a 50% discount on your Zoo admission tickets at the gate." The discount applies to the walk-up gate price, a valid bus or train ticket for the date of the visit must be shown for every ticket bought, and it cannot be combined with any other offer.

Work through the numbers for a weekday in October. The off-peak weekday gate price for an adult, including ZSL's optional 10% donation, is £32.50; halved, that is £16.25. The cheapest online advance price for the same day, without the donation, is £27.70. So arriving by bus is about £11 cheaper per adult than the best online fare, which reverses the usual advice: at Whipsnade, if you are coming by public transport, do not book online.

The bus fare largely pays for itself at the gate. The Centrebus ZOO service starts at £3 for an adult single, with a group ticket for up to five people at £9. Set that against £16.25 for a half-price gate ticket rather than £27.70 online, and arriving by public transport is the cheaper way in. Keep the tickets: you need them at the gate.

The bus, and the dates it does not run

The Centrebus service branded ZOO runs from stand LS13 at Luton Interchange, the town-centre bus station, to Whipsnade Zoo via Dunstable in about 40 minutes. Luton Borough Council funds it, and six journeys run each way.

Now the catch, straight from the printed timetable. "ZOO operates from 28th March until 1st November 2026. In term time buses run every weekend and bank holiday. During school holidays buses run every day." The autumn half-term window is Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, and after 1 November the service stops for the winter.

So a car-free visit works at weekends, on bank holidays and in English school holidays between late March and the start of November, and not otherwise. Buses stop on Dukes Avenue at the main entrance, so there is no walk from a village stop. A separate service 40 runs from Dunstable, operated by South Beds Dial a Ride and funded by Central Bedfordshire Council, with a family day ticket at £8 for up to two adults and three children.

The train end is straightforward. St Pancras to Luton takes 25 to 36 minutes direct, and an Off-Peak Day Return was £19.80 in September 2026, with the journey planner also offering a £21.00 version of the same ticket type; take whichever it gives you. An Anytime Day Return was £38.00, so travel after the morning peak. See our guide to buying British train tickets and our page on Luton to central London.

What Whipsnade costs, and the four price tiers

ZSL prices Whipsnade in four bands, and the cheapest online prices apply only if you book before 10am on the day of your visit. From 10am onwards you pay the gate price online too.

Ticket, booked online before 10am on the dayOff-peak weekdayStandardStandard weekendPeak
Adult 16-64, without donation£27.70£29.00£30.60£31.50
Child 3-15, without donation£19.40£20.30£21.50£22.10
Adult at the gate, with donation£32.50£34.00£35.75£36.75

Adding ZSL's optional 10% donation raises the off-peak weekday adult price to £30.50 online and £32.50 at the gate. Under-3s and ZSL members go free; the concession rate for over-65s, students with ID and disabled adults is about £2 below the adult rate, and one free carer ticket is given at the entrance on request.

Two costs are separate. Driving into the zoo rather than parking outside it carries an extra charge, and the external car park is free; motorhomes and commercial vehicles cannot go inside. And the Great Whipsnade Railway is charged per ride: £5.00 for an adult including seniors, £2.50 for a child aged 3 to 15, under-3s and essential carers free, with tokens from the Station Store.

The zoo railway closes for the winter on 1 November 2026 and runs weekends only in October. ZSL gives it as daily from 28 March to 27 September 2026, weekends only from 3 to 18 October, then daily from 24 October to 1 November. First train is 11:30 at weekends and in school holidays and 12:30 on other weekdays, last train 16:00 either way. If the steam train is the reason a child is coming, check the date before you travel.

How long Whipsnade takes, and the hill

Six hundred acres is the number to respect. Whipsnade is not a city zoo with a loop you can walk in ninety minutes; it is a hillside, and the distance between the far enclosures is measured in miles. Allow a full day.

Opening hours are 10:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00 until 23 October 2026, and 10:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 15:00 from 24 October 2026 to 12 February 2027. The animal houses and the Passage through Asia section close fifteen minutes before the zoo does, so the last hour is an outdoor hour. The site is on the Chiltern escarpment, which means real gradients and real views north across Bedfordshire, and the chalk lion cut into the hillside below the zoo is visible from the road.

Woburn Safari Park: why you cannot come without a car

Woburn's own website is blunter than we would be. "The Safari Park is only accessible in your own vehicle (no open top, cabriolet cars, bicycles or motorbikes are permitted, and you can't enter on foot)." And, on the same site, "Taxi drivers will be charged admission, as well as all passengers at the applicable rate."

Read that second sentence twice. A taxi from the nearest station is not a workaround: you would pay the fare and then buy the driver a ticket at the adult rate on top. There is no shuttle bus and no pedestrian entrance, so without a car Woburn Safari Park is not a day trip from London.

If you do have one, admission includes the vehicle. An Advance Day Ticket bought online is £28.99 for an adult aged 16 and over and £24.99 for a child aged 3 to 15; a Last Minute Day Ticket, online or at the gate, is £32.49 and £28.99. Children aged 0 to 2 need no ticket, a disabled individual ticket is £21.99, and every ticket covers the Road Safari, the Foot Safari, the keeper talks and the play areas, with unlimited circuits of the Road Safari.

Soft-top and convertible cars may enter the park but not the Kingdom of the Carnivores or the African Forest, and a marked bypass lets any driver avoid the carnivore and monkey sections. No dogs. The Foot Safari walk-throughs close thirty minutes before the park does. Use MK43 0TU for the entrance gate on the High Street in Ridgmont, and expect to drive half a mile through the estate before the ticket lane. Our page on car hire in London and our guide to driving in the UK for foreign drivers cover what a hire car for the day involves.

Woburn's winter, and Woburn Abbey

The safari park runs a long but complicated season: weekdays it opens at 10:00 with last entry at 16:00, and at weekends last entry is 17:00. From 12 November to 16 December 2026 it opens Thursday to Sunday only, 09:30 with last entry at 15:00, then daily over the Christmas holidays to 4 January 2027, closed on 24, 25 and 26 December. Poor light or bad weather in winter can bring closing time forward.

Woburn Abbey itself, the Russells' house and the reason the name is famous, has been closed to visitors since 2019. The estate describes seven years of restoration: screen walls rebuilt, roof and stonework repaired, new silks woven for the State Rooms, the Mortlake Tapestries conserved for the Grotto Chamber they were bought for in 1664. Its pages say it is "preparing to welcome guests back" and, on the deer park pages, that this is "next summer", which reads as summer 2027. No date had been published when we checked.

The one part of the estate open to visitors this autumn is the deer park, and only on a booked tour. Woburn's keepers run Deer Rutting Tours at £60 a head on October 2026 dates at 07:15 and 15:45, taking small groups by trailer into parts of the 3,000-acre park that are normally closed. Tours last an hour and a half to two hours, meet in the car park by The Woburn Hotel and include a hot drink and either a breakfast roll or a venison burger. Children must be 12 or over and accompanied; no dogs. For deer you can see for nothing, Richmond Park is inside London.

Doing both, and why we would not

Fourteen miles separate the two, on country roads, with no public transport connection a visitor would want to use. With a car you could do Whipsnade in the morning and Woburn's road safari in the afternoon, but you would pay two full admissions, drive between them at lunchtime and arrive at the second with the walk-throughs about to close.

Pick one. Whipsnade is the better day for anyone without a car, for anyone who wants to walk, and for anyone who wants a hillside view with their rhinoceroses. Woburn is the better day for a family in a hire car who want animals at the window.

Two footnotes for London visitors. If you are staying in Bloomsbury you are already on this estate's map: Woburn Place, Woburn Square and the Bedford and Russell squares around them are named for the same family, who developed the district and still own Woburn; our guide to staying in Bloomsbury has the streets. And if a family day in a hire car is the plan, compare the drive with Legoland Windsor or the trains to Bletchley Park, which is reachable without a car.

Our ranking of the cheapest day trips from London and the full list at day trips from London cover the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get to Whipsnade Zoo from London without a car?

Yes. Take a train from St Pancras to Luton, then the Centrebus ZOO service from Luton Interchange, which takes about 40 minutes and stops at the main entrance. It runs from 28 March to 1 November, at weekends and on bank holidays in term time and every day in school holidays.

Is it cheaper to book Whipsnade tickets online?

Not if you arrive by bus or train. ZSL gives a 50% discount on the walk-up gate price to anyone showing a valid bus or train ticket for that date, which works out below the cheapest online advance price. If you drive, book online before 10am on the day of your visit for the lowest price.

Can you visit Woburn Safari Park without a car?

No. The park says it is only accessible in your own vehicle, with no entry on foot, by bicycle or by motorbike, and that taxi drivers are charged admission as well as every passenger. There is no shuttle bus. Without a car, choose Whipsnade instead.

Is Woburn Abbey open to visitors?

No. It has been closed for restoration since 2019 and the estate says it is preparing to reopen, with its deer park pages referring to "next summer", which reads as summer 2027. No date had been published when we checked in September 2026. Booked deer park tours at £60 a head are the only way in this autumn.
