Highclere Castle in Hampshire is the house used as Downton Abbey. It is a private family home, not a museum, so it opens only on set dates, every ticket has to be booked in advance, and popular tours sell out months ahead. The nearest station is Newbury, about 50 minutes from London Paddington, and a taxi from there takes around 15 minutes.
This is the single most important thing to understand before you plan anything: you cannot turn up at Highclere. There is no walk-up admission on any date. The estate sells specific products for specific windows of the year, and outside those windows the gates are shut to visitors.
The good news is that the 2027 dates are already on sale. When we checked in September 2026 the castle's ticket shop was listing a spring public opening running from March to June 2027 and a summer public opening from Sunday 11 July to Thursday 2 September 2027, alongside several separate guided-tour seasons.

Booking: three arrival windows, and everything pre-sold
On public opening days, Highclere sells timed admission in three windows. Morning admission lets you enter the castle between 10am and 12.30pm, midday between 12.30pm and 2.30pm, and afternoon between 2pm and 4pm. You can walk in at any point inside your window rather than at a fixed minute.
Last entry to the castle itself is 3.30pm, which makes the afternoon slot tighter than it looks. The castle's own advice for afternoon ticket holders is to see the gardens and cafés first and go in nearer 2pm. Whatever slot you hold, the gardens, tearooms and gift shop stay open to you all day until 5pm.
Tours of the castle and the Egyptian Exhibition are self-guided, with knowledgeable guides posted through the rooms to answer questions. That is not the same as a guided tour, which Highclere sells separately and at a much higher price.
A third-party "Downton Abbey tour" may not actually include the castle. Highclere states this in plain terms on its own ticket pages: if you buy an all-inclusive Downton Abbey tour from another company, check whether entry to the house is really part of it. Some coach tours only drive past or visit the village locations.

The £7 difference buys the Egyptian Exhibition in the cellars, and for most visitors it is worth it. The fifth Earl of Carnarvon, who lived here, spent years excavating in Egypt with Howard Carter and funded the search that found the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. The exhibition tells that story in the house of the man who paid for it, which the British Museum cannot do.
If you are only interested in the television series, castle and gardens alone will do. Children under 4 need no ticket at all.
The guided tours, and why they cost £145
Alongside the public openings, Highclere runs small-group guided tours in months when the house is otherwise closed: a January season, a February season built around Downton and Tutankhamun, guided tours in March, and further ones in June and July. In autumn 2026 the Real Lives and Film Sets tours were priced at £145 per adult, £85 per child aged 4 to 16 and £85 per carer.
That price buys a guided tour of both the house and the Egyptian Exhibition in a much smaller group, seasonal refreshments chosen by the head chef, and a signed copy of Lady Carnarvon's book collected from the gift shop on the day. It is a different experience from a public opening day, not simply a more expensive queue.
The tours genuinely sell out. When we checked in September 2026, Highclere's shop described many of its autumn guided tours as sold out and said group bookings for 2026 were fully booked, with 2027 group bookings opening in the autumn. If a specific tour matters to you, book it first and plan your travel around the date you get.
Getting there from London without a car
Great Western Railway runs direct trains from London Paddington to Newbury, taking between about 40 minutes and an hour depending on the service. In October 2026 an off-peak return cost £37.30. From Newbury station a taxi to Highclere takes about 15 minutes.
The return leg is where people come unstuck. Highclere warns that taxis do not wait outside the castle and that you will need to telephone for one, and that there are not always taxis waiting at the smaller stations either. Book both legs before you travel. The castle names three local firms it uses without taking commission: Cabco on 01635 33333, Go Green Taxis on 01635 800 990 and Ave Cabs on 01635 31212.
There are two alternative stations. London Waterloo to Andover puts you about 20 minutes away by road, and Waterloo to Whitchurch in Hampshire about 10 minutes away, although Highclere notes that Whitchurch taxis tend to be more expensive because the station is remote. Driving, and the sat-nav trap
By car, Highclere is off the A34 near Newbury, west of London. The castle asks drivers not to rely on a sat-nav close to the estate because the postal address, RG20 9RN, leads to the wrong entrance. Use RG20 9LE and then follow the brown tourist signs.
Driving also solves the picnic problem. Picnics are not allowed in the gardens, but you are welcome to eat one back at your car in the parking area. The rules that surprise visitors
- No photography inside the castle. It is welcomed on the grounds and lawns, but not indoors. Drones, and smart or camera glasses, are banned across the whole estate.
- No large bags or backpacks in the castle grounds. Leave them in your car or coach. There is a small secure storage area at Visitors Reception for people arriving by taxi, which is the situation most rail visitors will be in.
- No dogs in the castle, exhibition or gardens except assistance dogs, which should be notified in advance. Dogs are allowed on the public footpaths crossing part of the estate.
- Pushchairs can be used around the grounds and lawns but not inside the house; you may leave one in the front hall at your own risk.
- Upstairs is stairs only. The state rooms and exhibition are accessible to manual wheelchairs, but the Upstairs Gallery is reached by a long, steep staircase. Photograph albums of the bedrooms are kept in the Saloon for anyone who cannot make the climb.

Is it worth it if you have not watched the series?
Honestly, it depends on what else you have seen. Highclere is a large Victorian country house, remodelled in the 1840s by Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament, and the rooms are grand. But if you have already visited Hampton Court or Windsor, the house alone may not justify the journey and the booking effort.
The Egyptian material is the thing that makes Highclere unusual, and the gardens and parkland are genuinely fine. If you have watched Downton, none of this argument matters: you will recognise the hall, the library and the saloon within a minute of walking in.
Other days out on the same side of London
Highclere is in the same direction as several better-known trips, which helps if your chosen date falls outside the opening season. Winchester is an hour from Waterloo and has England's old capital, a cathedral and a river walk. Salisbury is the gateway to Stonehenge, and Bath is further west on the Paddington line.
