Where to Eat in Hampstead

Expensive and pretty. The pubs, the side streets, and a picnic.

Hampstead has two sensible answers and one expensive mistake. The answers are the old pubs, where a five-star kitchen serves a proper lunch at a fair price, and South End Road at the bottom of the hill, where the bakeries and cafés are half the village's money. The mistake is a long restaurant lunch in the village itself, when the Heath is two minutes away and a picnic is better.

The geography decides everything here, so get it straight first. Hampstead village sits at the top of a steep hill around Hampstead Underground station, the deepest station on the network. South End Green, at the bottom of the eastern slope, has Hampstead Heath Overground station and the northern terminus of bus route 24. Between them is the Heath.

Our guide to Hampstead covers the village streets, the literary houses and who the area suits. This page is the meal, with each business checked on the Food Standards Agency register and the inspection date given, because in Hampstead the ratings are not what the postcode would suggest.

The three old pubs, and what their kitchens actually do

Hampstead's pubs are the reason to eat here rather than somewhere cheaper, and all three of the well-known ones came out of our check well.

All three serve full meals, and our estimate for September 2026 is £16 to £22 for a main course, which undercuts the village restaurants. Kitchens in old pubs close earlier than the bars, often by 21:00, so check food hours if you want a late dinner. Our round-up of the city's oldest taverns sets out which claims about age hold up and which do not, and our beer garden guide covers the ones with space outside.

Book for a Sunday roast, and do it early in the week. Three small pubs cannot seat the number of people who walk the Heath on a Sunday, and by Friday the good sittings have gone. If you have not booked, eat at 12:00 or at 15:30 rather than at 13:30, and treat a walk-in at 13:30 as unlikely rather than unlucky. Our page on the Sunday roast explains what is on the plate and what it should cost.

Flask Walk and Perrin's Court: the village's small places

The two best village streets for food are both alleys, which is why people walk past them. Flask Walk runs east from Hampstead High Street beside the pub of the same name; Perrin's Court cuts between the High Street and Heath Street.

On Flask Walk: a French bakery at number 9, rated five stars in October 2025; a gelateria at number 8, rated five in February 2026; and a small Japanese restaurant at number 5, rated five in August 2025. On Perrin's Court: a sourdough bakery at number 14, rated five in September 2025, and a café at Village Mount rated five in June 2026.

On Heath Street itself, an Italian restaurant and hotel at 107 to 111 held five stars at an inspection in September 2024, and a Hungarian patisserie at number 32 held four in July 2026. The patisserie sells cream cakes and coffee in a room that has not been modernised in decades, and that is the point of it rather than a criticism. A Japanese restaurant at number 73 held four in October 2025, and is the place people mean when they say Hampstead has a good Japanese restaurant. Our guide to Japanese food and sushi in London and our round-up of bakeries and pastries both cover the wider city.

South End Road, which is where the value is

Walk down the hill, or take the 24 or 46 bus, and the prices drop by roughly a third within a kilometre. South End Road runs along the eastern edge of the Heath from South End Green, and it is a working parade of shops rather than a village high street.

The pub at 14 South End Road held five stars in November 2025 and has a garden. A bakery at number 45 and a coffee house at number 65 were both rated five, in December and October 2025; a gelateria at number 55 held five in August 2024; and a takeaway counter at number 43 held five in December 2025. There is a five-star branch of a bakery chain at number 1, thirty seconds from the Overground station.

This is the sensible place to start or finish a Heath walk. It is level, it is two minutes from a station, and our estimate for September 2026 is £7 to £12 for a coffee and something substantial, against £12 to £18 for the same thing at the top of the hill.

Three addresses we left out

Hampstead is one of the most expensive postcodes in Britain and its hygiene ratings do not follow the property prices. On the streets in this article we found a well-known pub on Well Walk rated three out of five in July 2026, an Italian restaurant in Perrin's Court rated three in July 2026, a coffee roastery on South End Road rated two in February 2026 and a restaurant on the same road rated one in July 2026. We have named none of them.

We have also left out a much-loved village café whose five-star rating dates from an inspection in November 2022, because that is too old to tell a visitor anything useful. The register is free, searchable by street and updated after every inspection, and every food business must display its certificate.

What to take up to the Heath, and where to buy it

A picnic is the right answer here more often than a restaurant, because the views are the thing you came for and there is nowhere to eat with a view of them except the grass. Parliament Hill, on the eastern side, has the protected panorama of the City; the Pergola on the western side has a different kind of view and almost nobody in it.

Build the picnic at whichever end you are starting from. At the top, the bakeries on Flask Walk and Perrin's Court and the supermarket on Hampstead High Street; at the bottom, the bakery and delicatessen counters on South End Road. Bread, cheese, fruit and a bottle of water for two people comes to our estimate of £14 to £22 in September 2026, which is less than one main course in the village.

Our guide to buying picnic food in London explains which supermarket ranges are worth it, our Hampstead Heath guide has the paths and the ponds, and the Hill Garden and Pergola is the quietest place on the Heath to eat one.

Two stations, one hill, and the cheap end is at the bottom. Come up by Overground to Hampstead Heath, eat at South End Green, walk north over Parliament Hill to Kenwood, then down Heath Street into the village and home from Hampstead Underground station. That order puts the cheap food first, the free house in the middle and the steep climb before lunch rather than after it.

Kenwood's café, and the hour it shuts

Kenwood, at the top of the Heath, is a free house with a Rembrandt in it and a café in the old service wing. English Heritage publishes the opening calendar, and the café's hours are not the same as the grounds': in the week beginning 28 September 2026 the café opened 09:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Wednesday and 09:00 to 17:00 from Thursday to Sunday, while the grounds stayed open until 18:00 or 19:00.

From 26 October to 20 December 2026 the café runs 09:00 to 16:00 every day, and the house closes at 16:00 too. That matters for a winter afternoon: a walk that starts at 14:00 will reach Kenwood after the kitchen has stopped serving hot food. The catering operation held a five-star hygiene rating at an inspection in December 2025.

Our page on Kenwood House covers the paintings, the Robert Adam library and how long the visit takes.

What Hampstead costs, against the published figures

The Office for National Statistics publishes the individual prices its collectors record each month. In the August 2026 collection the median restaurant main course in its dearest region was £17.00, with an upper quartile of £19.99, and a restaurant cup of coffee came in at £3.50. ONS does not name the regions in that file. The one used here as London leads on the price of every drink in it, which is an inference we would rather state than bury.

WhereWhat you getOur estimate, September 2026
Village restaurants, Heath StreetA main course with table service£18–£28
The three historic pubsA main course, or a roast on Sunday£16–£22
Flask Walk and Perrin's CourtCoffee, pastry, a bowl of something£9–£16
South End RoadThe same, at the bottom of the hill£7–£12
A picnic for two from the shopsBread, cheese, fruit, water£14–£22

The pattern is consistent: Hampstead village charges a premium of roughly a third over the London median, and the bottom of the hill does not. Our guide to eating cheaply in London puts that in context, the price of a pint has the published drink figures, and for gelato specifically, both of the parlours named above appear in our round-up of ice cream and gelato in London.

Rain, Monday, and the other things that spoil the plan

Three practical warnings. Hampstead in rain is a hill of wet pavement with very little cover, and the village cafés are tiny, so a wet Sunday means standing outside a full room. Several small places close on Monday or open late. And the village has no real evening: the pubs stay open but the streets are quiet after about 22:00, and the Underground station's lifts queue when a pub empties.

If you want the same combination of an old hill, old pubs and a view, but with more places to shelter, eating in Richmond is the comparable day on the other side of London, and it has a river instead of a heath.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I eat in Hampstead village?

The three historic pubs are the best value with a proper meal: the one on Spaniards Road, the one up the steps off Heath Street and the one on Flask Walk, all rated five stars at inspections between July 2025 and August 2026. For something lighter, the alleys of Flask Walk and Perrin's Court hold the village's best bakeries and small restaurants.

Is Hampstead expensive for food?

The village is, by roughly a third over the London median. The official August 2026 collection put the median London restaurant main course at £17.00; our estimate for a Hampstead village main is £18 to £28. South End Road, at the bottom of the hill, is noticeably cheaper for the same quality.

Is there anywhere to eat on Hampstead Heath itself?

Only at the edges. The café at Kenwood, at the northern end, runs 09:00 to 16:00 every day from 26 October to 20 December 2026 and later in the summer. There are kiosks near some entrances. In the middle of the Heath there is nothing, which is the argument for a picnic.

Do I need to book for a Sunday lunch in Hampstead?

Yes, and several days ahead. The three pubs are small, the Heath is busy every Sunday of the year, and the middle sittings go first. If you have not booked, aim for 12:00 or after 15:00.

What should I buy for a picnic on Hampstead Heath?

Bread and pastries from the bakeries on Flask Walk or Perrin's Court at the top, or from South End Road at the bottom, with cheese, fruit and water from the supermarkets on Hampstead High Street. Our estimate for two people is £14 to £22 in September 2026, which is cheaper than a single village main course.
