The Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street in 48 minutes, but Liverpool Street is not where most visitors sleep. Budget 65 to 80 minutes from the aircraft door to a West End hotel, pick Tottenham Hale rather than Liverpool Street if you are heading west, and remember that no train at all leaves the airport between roughly 00:30 and 05:30.
Stansted sits about 40 miles north-east of London, which is further out than either Heathrow or Gatwick. Our guide to the airport handles arrival, the single terminal, the walk down to the platforms and the card rules. This page is about the hour or so after that, and about the decisions that make it shorter.
Three things decide how long the journey really takes: which station you get off at, whether you take a train or a coach, and what time of night you land. Our companion pages on the run in from Gatwick and the Luton shuttle and train put the same questions to London's other two out-of-town airports.
Get off at Tottenham Hale, not Liverpool Street
Every Stansted Express calls at Tottenham Hale on the way to Liverpool Street, and Tottenham Hale is on the Victoria line. That matters because the Victoria line runs to King's Cross St Pancras, Euston, Warren Street, Oxford Circus, Green Park, Victoria and Brixton without a change. Liverpool Street is the right answer for the City and the east, and a detour for everyone else.
The airport gives 37 minutes to Tottenham Hale against 48 to Liverpool Street. You lose nothing by getting off early, and you skip a crowded interchange with your bags.
| Staying around | Change at | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Oxford Circus, Soho, Victoria, Pimlico, Euston, King's Cross | Tottenham Hale | Victoria line, no change |
| Covent Garden, Holborn, South Kensington, Knightsbridge | Tottenham Hale | Victoria line, one change at Finsbury Park or Green Park |
| The City, Shoreditch, Spitalfields, Whitechapel | Liverpool Street | Walk, or one short Tube hop |
| Paddington, Bond Street, Farringdon, Canary Wharf | Liverpool Street | Elizabeth line, no change |
| Stratford, Hackney, the Olympic Park, Greenwich | Stratford, on the trains that call there | Jubilee line, DLR or Elizabeth line |
For the eastern options, our neighbourhood guides to Shoreditch and Whitechapel and the East End explain how far each is from Liverpool Street, and our page on hotels in the east of the city covers where to sleep. The Elizabeth line from Liverpool Street is the single most useful onward connection here, because it goes west under the whole of central London.

How long it really takes to your hotel
The 48-minute figure is a station-to-station time. The table below gives whole journeys instead, drawn from TfL's own planner for a weekday around 11:00 in the last week of September 2026, and counting the short walk from the terminal down to the platforms.
| From Stansted to | How the planner got there | Terminal to destination |
|---|---|---|
| Liverpool Street | Stansted Express, direct | 51 minutes |
| Oxford Circus | Off at Tottenham Hale, then Victoria line | 64 minutes |
| King's Cross St Pancras | Off at Tottenham Hale, then Victoria line | 60 minutes |
| Farringdon | Liverpool Street, then Circle or Hammersmith & City line | 64 minutes |
| London Bridge | Liverpool Street, then Central and Northern lines via Bank | 67 minutes |
| Victoria | Off at Tottenham Hale, then Victoria line | 68 minutes |
| Covent Garden | Tottenham Hale, Victoria line, then Piccadilly line | 69 minutes |
| Paddington | Liverpool Street, then Elizabeth line | 73 minutes |
| South Kensington | Tottenham Hale, Victoria line, then District line | 75 minutes |
| Canary Wharf | Tottenham Hale, then Stratford and the Jubilee line | 76 minutes |
Add passport control and baggage reclaim to the front of all of these. Two hours from touchdown to hotel check-in is a realistic plan; ninety minutes is optimistic. Our page on when London's network is busiest explains why the last leg stretches at 08:00 and 18:00.
Tottenham Hale is a change of platform, not a change of station. The rail platforms and the Victoria line entrance sit in the same complex, so the interchange is short and step-free. If you are heading for the West End, Victoria or Euston, this is the stop to use, and you can touch out on the same card you tapped at Stansted.
Paying: the card in your wallet matters
Tapping a contactless bank card or a phone wallet works on the Stansted Express in both directions. An Oyster card does not, which is the single most common mistake made at this airport. The practical version: keep the Oyster for the Underground and let the bank card pay for the train.
If you tap in at Stansted and out at Tottenham Hale, your onward Victoria line trip is a separate journey and you will need to touch in again. Use the same card throughout so the system can add your day together; our explainer on how Oyster and contactless differ covers card clash and daily caps. Note that Stansted Express fares sit outside TfL's caps, so the airport leg is always charged on top.
Advance tickets are the other route. The Stansted Express site sells them, the airport says booking ahead saves money, and paper or e-tickets bought at a National Rail station also qualify for the 2FOR1 attraction offers, which contactless cards do not. We could not read the current Stansted Express fare table, because the operator's website blocks automated requests, so compare the tap-in price with the advance price yourself on the Stansted Express website before you travel. Regulated fares across England were frozen by the government on 2 March 2026, but not every airport express single counts as regulated, so check rather than assume.
Coaches: which of the three routes stops nearest your bed
The bus and coach station is opposite the terminal entrance, two minutes on the flat, and it runs around the clock. National Express alone operates more than 200 services a day to London on three lettered routes, and they go to very different parts of the city.
| Route | Calls at | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| A6 | Tottenham Hale, Golders Green, Finchley Road, St John's Wood, Baker Street, Paddington, Victoria | Marylebone, Paddington, Victoria and north-west London |
| A8 | Tottenham Hale, Stamford Hill, De Beauvoir Town, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street, Southwark, Waterloo, Victoria | Shoreditch, the City and the South Bank |
| A9 | Stratford, Canary Wharf, Bow, Mile End, Whitechapel, Liverpool Street, Bethnal Green | East London and Docklands |
The A6 is the one people miss. It is the only direct public transport link from Stansted to Paddington and Baker Street, and it saves a cross-London Tube trip with luggage. The airport warns that stops vary slightly by direction and by timetable version, so check the exact stop list for your date when you book.
Flibco is the other operator, with a departure every half hour round the clock, including direct runs to Liverpool Street, to Stratford and to Finsbury Park, plus services calling at Redbridge, Enfield and Wood Green. Finsbury Park puts you on both the Victoria and Piccadilly lines; Stratford gives you the Jubilee line, the DLR and the Elizabeth line, as our guide to Stratford explains. A Flibco booking stays valid for 24 hours, which is the right answer to a delayed flight. Coaches to Victoria Coach Station also connect with long-distance services out of London.
Most coach operators allow two medium suitcases up to 20 kg each plus one small bag, and all of them will put you on the next available service free of charge if your flight was delayed. Book ahead anyway: the airport says a pre-booked seat is both cheaper and guaranteed.
The five hours when nothing runs on rails
This is the practical difference between Stansted and Gatwick or Luton. In sample searches, the last train left the airport at 00:25 and the next one was at 05:23, a gap of almost five hours with no rail option at all. The airport gives the last departure as 00:30 and the first as 05:30, or 06:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The gap is covered by coaches, which do not stop. If your flight lands at 01:15, a National Express or Flibco service is the realistic way into London, and you should book it before you fly rather than queue for it at 01:30. A pre-booked private hire car is the alternative, and an airport hotel is the third. Our comparison of overnight transport at each London airport sets out what runs where, and our page on sleeping at a London airport covers the hotels you can walk to.
A 06:00 departure from Stansted cannot be reached by the first train on every day of the week. Depending on the day of the week, the first service out of Liverpool Street goes at some point in the hour between 03:40 and 04:40, and the run takes about an hour. On the later days that arrives after bag drop closes. Check your exact date, and if the times do not work, book a coach or a room at the airport instead of hoping.
Going back: why the airport says four hours
Stansted's own advice for the journey out is to allow at least four hours before your departure time when travelling from London. That sounds excessive until you add it up: an hour of London traffic or a missed train, the 48-minute run, the walk, the queue at bag drop and the queue at security.
Trains are the more predictable half of that equation, since they do not sit in traffic. If you have booked an advance ticket for a specific train, ask the operator what happens if you miss it; many ticket types let you travel on a later service, but the cheapest ones often do not. Which ticket types allow that is set out in our guide to UK rail tickets and advance fares.
The station itself: luggage, lifts and assistance
Stansted's railway station is directly beneath the terminal, with lifts, escalators and ramps. Every platform is reachable without stairs. Staff are there every day of the year apart from Christmas Day, the ticket office runs from 06:30 to midnight, and there are machines and a rail information desk. Unlike the station at Gatwick, this one has public Wi-Fi.
Passenger assistance is arranged through Greater Anglia, which asks for at least 24 hours' notice. Folding bikes travel free on the Stansted Express if they are fully folded, but full-size bikes are not carried and e-scooters are banned on UK trains altogether; our page on taking a bike on London transport covers the rules at the other end. Arriving early for an evening flight, or wanting a day in town without your suitcase? We list the options in where to leave luggage around London.
For onward journeys once you are off the airport train, our guides to step-free travel across London and suitcases on the Underground are the two most useful things to read before you land.
What it costs a couple and a family
The cheapest National Express fare from Stansted is £10.50 one way, a figure that already contains the £1.50 booking fee and applies to a limited number of seats (September 2026). For two people that is £21.00 each way if you book early enough to get the lowest fare, against a coach journey of about 45 minutes from Tottenham Hale or longer to the centre.
Train fares are harder to pin down in advance. Contactless is charged per adult with no cap, advance fares vary by train, and child fares differ between ticket types. Two adults and two children should price both options properly rather than assume the coach wins: check the coach fare for four seats against four train tickets on your date. Children aged 5 to 15 pay half the adult Advance or Off-Peak fare on National Rail, and overseas visitors are allowed to buy a Two Together Railcard, which Stansted's own station sells.
Frequently asked questions
Should I get off the Stansted Express at Tottenham Hale?
If your hotel is in the West End, near Victoria, Euston or King's Cross, yes. Tottenham Hale is 37 minutes from the airport and sits on the Victoria line, which runs directly to all of those. Stay on board to Liverpool Street only when the City, Shoreditch or an Elizabeth line station is your destination.
How long should I allow from Stansted to a West End hotel?
Around 65 to 80 minutes from the platform, plus passport control and baggage reclaim. In a sample midweek search, Oxford Circus took 64 minutes and Covent Garden 69 minutes door to door from the terminal. Two hours from landing to check-in is a sensible plan.
Is the coach cheaper than the train from Stansted?
Usually, if you book ahead. The lowest National Express fare is £10.50 one way with the booking fee included, and only a limited number of seats sell at it. The coach shares the road with everyone else, so it is less predictable, but it reaches places the train does not, including Paddington, Baker Street and Canary Wharf.
What do I do if I land at Stansted at 02:00?
Take a coach. There is no train between roughly 00:30 and 05:30, but the bus and coach station opposite the terminal never closes, and both National Express and Flibco run into London overnight. Book before you fly, because prices rise and seats fill on overnight services.
Can I use my Oyster card on the train from Stansted?
No, and this includes the Visitor Oyster card. Pay for the airport train by tapping a bank card or a phone, then either switch to the Oyster card at Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale for the Underground, or keep tapping the same card all the way.
