Eat on Rye Lane and the streets off it, not on the car park roof. The West African kitchens on Peckham High Street, the covered market inside 48 Rye Lane, the pie and mash shop and the south Indian dining room on Holly Grove were all here long before the rooftop bars, they are open all year, and they are half the price.
Peckham's reputation now rests on an open-air bar ten decks up a car park ramp, which trades for part of the year and is dark for the rest of it. In 2026 that season ended on 12 September. The food that made the area worth travelling to does not have a season.
Our guide to Peckham covers the car park, Peckham Levels, the library and the safety question; our page on Peckham Rye covers the park at the southern end of the lane. This page is the meal: which street, which hour, and what we found on the Food Standards Agency register before naming anything.

Inside 48 Rye Lane: the market most visitors walk past
Halfway up Rye Lane, behind an unremarkable frontage at number 48, there is a covered market of small units with a food court at the back. It is not the car park, it is not Peckham Levels, and it gets almost no attention. The units change, but on the register we found five of them holding five stars at inspections between February 2025 and May 2026: a Caribbean bakery at unit 57, a Chinese kitchen at unit 45, a hot-food counter at unit 15, another at unit 54a and a Japanese kitchen at unit 30.
This is the cheapest cooked lunch on the lane and the most local room in Peckham. Two units in the same market were rated three or below at their last inspection, so look at the certificate rather than the queue.
Outside, Rye Lane itself is a shopping street rather than an eating one: West African grocers with yam and smoked fish, halal supermarkets, Caribbean butchers and fishmongers with trays on the pavement. That is a place to buy ingredients, and our guide to the city's Ethiopian and West African kitchens explains what the unfamiliar items are.
Peckham High Street: West African food you can sit down to
The buying happens on Rye Lane; the eating happens on Peckham High Street, which runs east from the bottom of it. Three addresses here are the reason the meta description of this page mentions Nigerian food, and all three held five stars when we checked.
- Tasty African Food, 62 Peckham High Street SE15 5DP, inspected March 2026. A point-and-choose hot counter: you look into the trays, name what you want and it goes on a plate with rice or fufu.
- Teju's Street Food, 89 Peckham High Street SE15 5RS, inspected October 2025. Registered as a mobile caterer, so hours are less predictable, but the jollof is the point.
- Agrobeso, 139 Peckham High Street SE15 5SL, inspected August 2024.
Ordering at a counter like this is easier than it looks, and our page on Nigerian and Ghanaian cooking walks through it: point, say how much rice you want, and expect a full plate for well under the price of a central London sandwich and coffee.
A West African hot counter is the best value meal in south London. Our estimate for September 2026 is £8 to £12 for a plate that will defeat most people, against a £17.00 median for a London restaurant main course in the official August collection. Take cash as well as a card; some of the smallest counters still prefer it.
Pie and mash, and a Persian counter, on the same street
At 105 Peckham High Street there is a branch of a family pie and mash firm that has traded at 87 Tower Bridge Road since 1902. Tiled walls, marble-topped tables, a minced beef pie with mashed potato and parsley liquor, and jellied eels for the curious. It was rated five stars in May 2025. Our page on pie and mash and jellied eels explains the dish and why the shops are disappearing.
A few doors west, at 28 to 30 Peckham High Street, a Persian delicatessen and café has been a fixture of the street for many years; it was rated four stars in January 2026. It is a shop with tables rather than a restaurant, which is part of its character, and our guide to Persian food in London covers the dishes.
On Holly Grove, a quiet street thirty seconds off the High Street, there is a south Indian dining room at number 38, rated five stars in June 2025. It is small, it takes bookings, and it is the most reliable sit-down dinner within two minutes of Peckham Rye station. Our page on Goan and Keralan cooking in London explains what appears on a south Indian menu.
Bellenden Road: eight minutes west, and a different Peckham
Walk west from Rye Lane and the character changes inside three hundred metres. Bellenden Road is a low terrace of Victorian shops with a bakery, a butcher and four or five restaurants that take bookings and fill on a Friday.
What we found on the register, all five stars: a Thai restaurant at 168 Bellenden Road SE15 4BW, inspected May 2025; an Italian restaurant at number 161, inspected August 2026; a sourdough pizza kitchen at number 182, inspected August 2024; and a whole-carcass butcher at number 155, inspected April 2025, which is where to buy meat if you are self-catering. There is a pub at number 111 and a wine bar at 184.
This is where to go if you want a table, a wine list and a conversation. It is dearer than the High Street by roughly half again, and it is quiet on Mondays.
Choumert Road, the pub garden, and one address we left out
Choumert Road runs west off Rye Lane and has the neighbourhood's best pub garden at number 77, rated five stars in July 2025, along with a coffee bar at 28, a small restaurant at 43 and a bakery-restaurant at 44, all rated five between October 2025 and February 2026. At the Rye Lane end there is a short covered African market arcade.
It is also the street where we had to leave things out. A long-standing café at number 63 was rated two out of five in March 2026, and two African restaurants at numbers 18 and 38 to 40 were rated two and one respectively during 2025. We have not named any of them. The register is free to search by street and it takes half a minute.
For a Sunday, the pub at 77 is the practical answer in Peckham; our page on the Sunday roast explains what to expect and why you should book.
Peckham's hygiene ratings are more uneven than most of London. On the four streets in this article we found addresses at nought, one and two out of five within a few doors of five-star neighbours. That is not a reason to avoid Peckham; it is a reason to look at the certificate in the window, which every food business is required to display.
The rooftops, and the season that has already closed
Three raised places sell food and drink in Peckham and they behave differently from one another.
| Where | What it is | Season |
|---|---|---|
| The car park roof, 95a Rye Lane | Open-air bar with the long view north to the City | Warm months. The 2026 season ended on 12 September |
| Fifth floor, 133a Rye Lane | A wine bar with a terrace, rated five stars in July 2025 | Year round, with the terrace weather-dependent |
| Peckham Levels, 95a Rye Lane | Lower decks of the same car park: food units and a coffee roaster, both rated five | Year round, indoors |
The practical point is that two of the three work in February and the famous one does not. If the roof is what you came for, check the dates before you travel, because they move each year. Our round-up of London's rooftop bars has the year-round alternatives.
There is no Vietnamese restaurant in Peckham
This needs saying because it is repeated a great deal. We searched the Food Standards Agency register across the whole of SE15 and found no Vietnamese restaurant at any rating. What Peckham has is a Vietnamese and Chinese grocery on the High Street, which is a shop.
South-east London's Vietnamese cooking is two miles east, around Deptford High Street and New Cross, where the restaurants sit among Vietnamese and West African grocers. Our page on Vietnamese food in London explains the regional differences and where the clusters are, and our Deptford and New Cross guide covers getting there, which takes about ten minutes by train.
What a day of eating here costs
The Office for National Statistics publishes the individual prices its collectors record. In the August 2026 collection the median restaurant main course in its dearest region was £17.00, and the median takeaway sandwich in the same region was £5.25 against £4.30 for the United Kingdom. Those regional figures carry numbers and no names. The region we are calling London is the one that charges most for every alcoholic drink in the same file, which is a deduction rather than a label.
Peckham sits below that median almost everywhere except Bellenden Road. Our estimate for September 2026: £8 to £12 for a West African plate or a market lunch, £10 to £14 for pie and mash with a drink, £14 to £22 for a main on Bellenden Road, and £30 to £45 a head for two courses and wine at the dearest end. Our guide to eating cheaply in London sets the area against the rest of the city, and our page on the price of a pint has the published drink figures.
Across the district, Brixton is the closest comparison and the opposite arrangement: Brixton's food is inside two buildings, Peckham's is spread along a mile of street. If you are combining dinner with a gig, our guide to the venues of south London includes the Peckham rooms.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best food in Peckham?
For value, the West African hot counters on Peckham High Street and the covered market inside 48 Rye Lane. For a booked table, Bellenden Road, about eight minutes west. For a single dish worth travelling for, the south Indian dining room on Holly Grove or the pie and mash shop at 105 Peckham High Street.
Is Frank's Cafe on the Peckham car park open all year?
No. It runs over the warmer months and the 2026 season ended on 12 September. The dates change each year, so check before travelling. The lower decks of the same car park hold indoor food units that trade all year, and there is a wine bar with a terrace on the fifth floor of 133a Rye Lane.
Is there Vietnamese food in Peckham?
Not in restaurant form. We found no Vietnamese restaurant registered anywhere in SE15, only a Vietnamese and Chinese grocery. South-east London's Vietnamese restaurants are around Deptford High Street and New Cross, roughly ten minutes away by train.
How do I get to Peckham, and is it far?
Peckham Rye station is served by London Overground and Southeastern trains and there is no Underground station. Rye Lane runs north to south from the station, and everything in this article is within about ten minutes' walk of it. Bellenden Road and Choumert Road are the two turnings west.
How much should I spend on a meal in Peckham?
Our estimate for September 2026 is £8 to £12 for a hot counter plate, £14 to £22 for a main course on Bellenden Road, and £30 to £45 a head for two courses and a drink at the dearest restaurants.
