At 05:30 the only reliably open food in London is inside the big railway termini and inside the airports, and the airports win: at Gatwick, cafes after security start serving at 03:00 and most open by 04:00, while the streets outside your hotel will not wake up until about 07:00. If your departure is before roughly 06:30, buy something the night before and eat properly on the other side of security.
This is a timing problem rather than a food problem. London has thousands of places to eat breakfast, and almost none of them open early enough to matter on the morning of a 07:00 flight. Knowing which three categories do is the whole answer.

The London clock, from midnight to eight
London is not a city that eats early. Outside the transport system, almost nothing serves food between about 23:30 and 06:00, and a great deal of what visitors assume is open at 07:00 actually opens at 08:00 on a Saturday and later on a Sunday. The transport system is the exception, because it has to feed the people who run it. That gives you three things that work before 06:00: the inside of a major station, the inside of an airport, and a 24-hour supermarket or petrol station if you happen to be near one.
Nobody publishes a single list of opening times for shops inside London's termini. Network Rail's station pages say which kinds of outlet exist but not when they open, and the operators list them individually or not at all. The times for stations in this article are our estimate for September 2026, based on which services the stations are running; the airport times are published and sourced.
Inside the stations: what to expect before 06:00
The termini wake up in stages. Ticket offices and gatelines come first, then a coffee counter or two, then the bakeries and the supermarket, then everything else. At London Victoria the ticket office is staffed 24 hours a day, which tells you the building is busy long before the shops are.
Our estimate, for a weekday in September 2026: expect the first coffee and pastry counters between 05:00 and 06:00 at Victoria, Paddington, Euston, Waterloo, King's Cross, St Pancras and Liverpool Street, the station supermarkets from around 06:00, and sit-down pubs and restaurants considerably later. On a Sunday, push all of that back by an hour or more.

At the airports, eat after security
This is the single most useful rule on this page. Landside catering at a London airport exists mainly for people meeting arrivals; airside catering exists for people who are about to fly, which means it opens earlier and there is much more of it.
Gatwick publishes its hours, so the numbers are firm. In its restaurant directory, two airside places open at 03:00 and serve until the last flight, several more open at 03:30, and the bulk of the airside restaurants and cafes open at 04:00. Before security the pattern is 04:00 to 23:00, with one South Terminal coffee bar listed as open 24 hours a day.
Heathrow does not publish a comparable list, so we have not put times for it in this article. What Heathrow does publish is its advice on when to arrive: three hours before an international flight, two hours before a domestic or European one. On that timetable, a 07:00 flight to Europe means arriving at 05:00, which is well before anything outside the terminal is serving. Our guides to Gatwick and Heathrow cover the terminals themselves.
Airside breakfast is not the rip-off people expect. A cooked breakfast in an airport pub costs roughly what it costs in a central London hotel, and you are not also paying for a taxi to somewhere that opens at 07:00. The genuine saving is water: take an empty bottle through security and fill it at a free water point rather than buying one, as our page on tap water and refill points explains.
Getting there before the Tube starts
The Underground does not run all night except on Friday and Saturday, so the early-morning problem is often transport rather than breakfast. A few airport services start remarkably early. Checked on the Transport for London journey planner for a weekday in September 2026, the first Heathrow Express leaves Paddington at about 04:30 and the first Elizabeth line train to Heathrow at about 04:32; our comparison of the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line explains which is worth the difference. For Stansted, the first train from Liverpool Street leaves between 03:40 and 04:40 depending on the day. Thameslink runs through the night towards Luton, and the Luton DART shuttle between the station and the terminal operates 24 hours a day.

Buy it the night before, and buy the right things
For any departure before about 06:30, shopping the previous evening is simply the better plan. Station supermarkets and high-street convenience shops stay open late, and a bag put together at 21:00 costs a fraction of the same food bought at 05:00.
What travels well overnight without a fridge: bread rolls, pastries, bananas and apples, hard cheese, crisps, nuts, cereal bars, a carton of juice, and instant coffee or tea bags if your room has a kettle. What does not: anything with mayonnaise, cooked meat, milk-based drinks and cut fruit.
Security rules limit liquids in hand baggage, so drinks are the one thing to buy after security rather than the night before. The current allowance is published by the Civil Aviation Authority and changes from time to time, so check it rather than relying on what was true last year.
The hotel breakfast you have already paid for
Most London hotels start breakfast at 06:30 or 07:00, and many start later at weekends. If you have prepaid for breakfast and your flight makes it impossible, ask the night before whether the kitchen can leave a bag for you; a good number of hotels will, and the ones that will not should at least tell you so in time to plan round it.

The all-night exception
London has very few places that genuinely serve through the night, and none of them is beside a terminus. The best known is a bagel shop at 159 Brick Lane that trades 24 hours a day, which is about twenty minutes on foot from Liverpool Street and therefore only useful if you are already in the East End. It holds a four-star hygiene rating from an inspection in October 2025.
